Guide
A simple backup habit that works
Backups are boring until the day they are not. A workable habit beats a perfect plan you never finish. Homes and small offices in Frederick County can start simple and still protect the files that matter.
What to protect
- Documents, photos, tax records, and work files
- Email exports or important attachments if they live only on one PC
- License keys and setup notes you cannot easily replace
A practical pattern
- Keep important files in known folders, not scattered downloads.
- Copy them to an external drive on a regular schedule.
- Keep a second copy offsite or in a trusted cloud account if appropriate.
- Test a restore once in a while so you know the backup opens.
Before repair or migration
If a computer is acting up, back up what you can before major repair, upgrade, or replacement work. If the drive is already failing, say so before anyone writes more data to it. See data recovery: what to expect and the service policies on backups and data-loss risk.
